100 Chairs in 100 Days, Martino Gamper
Brompton Design District, 2006 – ongoing
In 2006, South Kensington Estates commissioned us to collaborate on the development of the Brompton and South Kensington areas of London. The brief was to develop a strategy to nurture design retail in the area. We initiated a contemporary programme staged in empty shops and buildings in the area, showcasing experimental design during the London Design Festival. The project has helped to build a more dynamic design culture by linking Brompton to the V&A Museum and Royal College of Art, and helping to forge Brompton’s international reputation as a leading design destination.
In 2016, Brompton Design District celebrated a decade of pioneering contemporary design during the London Design Festival with exhibits on the theme of Transformation. Highlights included: The Brompton Cocktail, an installation and series of recipes inspired by the original Brompton cocktail, an elixir served at the Royal Brompton Hospital; Breathless, a collaboration between Dechem, Okolo and the Czech Centre exploring the essence of glassmaking from production to use; and Toilet Break, presented by The Shit Museum and Dirty Furniture, exploring the potential of shit and how we might evaluate our most primordial activity.
